Was told yesterday that I had a chronic hep B infection. This came as a complete shock and I'm struggling to cope with the news at the minute. I have been referred to a liver specialist for a scan but the doctor mentioned superinfection. I have been panicked by what I found on the net when searching for this. The nurse at the clinic said that I did not have hep C and only mentioned hep B. Has any one any help or advice please?

Hi Jacey

the shock and the extra shock of the googled hepatitis b search are worries/pain many of us feel go thru, you are not panicking you are being brave and you found the website with a helpline do feel free to call 9/5 mon fri. We are the only uk charity for hep b, written by doctors administered by nurses and co/ordinated by me.
Please read the patient uk booklet
http://www.hepb.org.uk/information/resources/hepatitis_b_leafletsandbooklets
Simple info caringly written.
You doc is talking a unique scary term. Superinfection is nonsense he may mean a highish*very fixable* viral load. but he should give you prints of your liver function tests and youe hbv results these are better to understand calmly and clearly. Ask him for them or if a GUM clinic did the tests ask them. Although it is awful news, it is better to know about a hbv infection.
Basically being diagnosed opens the doors to saving your liver from damage and the vaccinations give you back a normal life. Sorry its late and i work tomorrow so just a quick post.

Do call 08000 461911 if you have questions

Paul
